Advertising vs obesity, the case of childrens
A recent study published on the European Journal of Public Health suggests that “from one in seven up to one in three obese children in the USA might not have been obese in the absence of advertising for unhealthy food on TV“.
Modelled BMI distribution of 10-year old US boys.Another study found “a significant association [...] between the proportion of children overweight and the numbers of advertisements per hour on children’s television, especially those advertisements that encourage the consumption of energy-dense, micronutrient-poor foods [...]. The quantity of advertising on children’s television appears to be related to the prevalence of excess body weight among children“.
Many parts of society command a reconsideration of how much power we should give to free markets vs state power (finance, health). The above studies suggest we should perhaps extend that debate to advertising…
